A Community Ultra-Swim Hosted by Swim in Common

The low-down…

The 2024 “Shore-2-Shore” Indian Ocean Odyssea is a community swimming event created by swimmers, for swimmers.

This is your chance to join a passionate and committed group of swimmers to cover 18km over 3 stages over the weekend of 9-11 February 2024. The event is entirely free, but does have some requirements - please keep reading.

The Stages

  1. Day 1 (Friday 9 February 2024) - 4.8km from Port Beach to Cottesloe Beach, starting as a bunch at 6am.

  2. Day 2 (Saturday 10 February 2024) - 6.5km from Cottesloe Beach to City Beach, starting as a bunch at 6am.

  3. Day 3 (Sunday 11 February 2024) - 6.7km from City Beach to Trigg Beach, [proposed] starting as a handicapped start with the fastest cumulative time from Day 1 and Day 2 to start at the same interval behind the slowest cumulative time who will leave at 6am, e.g. the fastest swimmer(s) will start Day 3 at 8.30am if their cumulative time is 2.5hrs faster than the slowest cumulative time. The idea being that all swimmers complete the final stage at approximately the same time for a joint celebration and sausage sizzle.

We recommend being down on the beach to start each stage 15 minutes before the stipulated start time. There will be no faff and paraphernalia like at other open water swimming events…it’s just you, your buddy and the ocean…just the way we like it!

Conditions of Participation

  1. Sign up here.

  2. Complete the registration and waiver here.

  3. Join our dedicated Strava Club here (this is how we will time the stages of the event) - you’ll need a smart watch for this. No watch? No results, sorry (but of course you can still swim!).

  4. Join the WhatsApp Channel broadcast group here for latest information leading up to the swim.

Rules of the Shore-2-Shore

  1. List details of your nominated “Swim Buddy” and then swim with them for the entire swim.

  2. Leave no trace on the beach, respect the ocean, and most importantly, look after yourself, your buddies and anyone else who might need your assistance 👍.

  3. You can use whatever equipment you like (wetsuit, fins/flippers, pull buoys, paddles etc), but only those who wear “skins” (i.e. normal bathers or FINA-legal race suit) for all 3 stages will be listed in the skins leaderboard - everyone else will be lumped into a singular “non-skins” category.

  4. Don’t cheat with your watch!! Leave it running from start to finish (that includes no pausing when you stop for a gel) as Strava will create a leaderboard for each stage based on your overall time.

  5. Have fun!

More Handy Tips

  1. On the morning of each stage, meet your buddy in the closest car park by the finish of the stage, leave one of your cars there, jump in the other car and drive down to the start. After the event, whoever’s car is at the finish can drive the other back to the start, saving the hassle of drop-offs for this point-2-point event.

  2. Consider using a tow float (like this one here) for extra visibility and as a ‘pause’ / rest for when you feed.

  3. The stages will be completely self-supported (meaning you’ll need to carry with you anything you' plan to consume), so consider how you will organise this and train accordingly.

  4. Consider using the Swim Smooth GURU (link here) or joining the Squad for a free trial session to help you prepare for the Shore-2-Shore.
